What to look for when hiring a corporate photographer
Booking a new photographer makes most teams nervous. Quality and reliability vary, and a bad day is very public - it ends up on the website, LinkedIn, and the event recap.
We’ve put together 5 tips to ensure you hire the right photographer for your needs.
1. You have to be able to work with them
The first conversation is the job. Notice how they treat the brief, how they talk about your people, and whether they make the day sound simple or precious. If your gut says they will be awkward with staff or with a CEO, trust that. Corporate shoots fail more often on manner than on cameras.
2. They need to understand how a business actually runs
They do not need an MBA. They do need to know why you want the files on Thursday, who has to approve usage, and that the careers page and the annual report are not the same brief. Ask how they handle sign-off, last-minute speaker changes, and a marketing manager who needs three images before they leave the venue. If they only talk about art, keep looking.
3. Confirm they will bring the right kit for your shoot
Talented and equipped are not the same thing. Dark ballrooms, mixed office light, and a stage with a screen behind the speaker all need different tools. Ask what they will bring for your venue, and whether they have shot that kind of space before. “I’ll see how it looks on the day” is not a plan.
4. Ask how you will get the pictures
You should not be wrangling FTP logins, 2GB email zips, or a memory stick. You want a gallery you can view, download, and share with the comms team the same week. Ask: when do selects land, when do finals land, and who can log in. If the answer is messy, the job will be messy.
5. Hire someone who already does this work
A wedding photographer, a real-estate shooter, and a corporate event photographer are not interchangeable because they all own a camera. Look at recent jobs that match yours: team days, conferences, workplace, employer brand. If the portfolio is mostly something else, they will learn on your company time.
A short call is enough
If they can talk through those five points without waffle, you are usually safe. If you want a sense of how we run a Sydney team day or event - including a gallery inside 48 hours - check a date and we will tell you what the day looks like before you book.
